If you've developed your own project-based learning lesson plans, you know that math project plans can be an octopus-like undertaking incorporating state or Common Core standards and possibly coordinating with other teachers—all within the class schedule. And then there are the necessary assessment rubrics. I undertook my first project-based learning math plan with my 5th graders several years ago.

My students were fully engaged and it was rewarding for all of us. But it was a bear to develop; I spent about 20 hours just on the plan. I swore then to find a more efficient way to build out my math projects.

Fellow teachers recommended many resources to me, and I found many online. These math projects, from schools across the US, provide overviews, activities, assessment rubrics, work-product descriptions, and ideas for reflection. Although they vary in format, you can adjust them to your students' learning situation and to curriculum demands. Projects from Math Matters in Indiana and PBLU, in particular, are very detailed and provide excellent project-based learning lesson plan templates.

The projects are organized by topic and grade level, when available. Keep in mind that project-based learning lesson plans are usually cross-curricular. Math projects often incorporate STEM—science, technology, engineering, and math—particularly in middle and high school classes. This is the premier guide for how to incorporate project-based learning into your children's daily lessons. Lori Pickert provides valuable advice on how to harness your child's natural questioning nature into inquiry-based projects that provide a sense of accomplishment and pride as they learn math, science, reading, writing, and art concepts.

The main critique of the book is that it is short on project ideas and structure. Use the detailed projects I list in this article as a jumping-off point for the guidance provided by Pickert. And we do know that they are attending to important attitudes and skills perhaps ignored in traditional lecture halls.

And why were these ideas in my head? Well, because they are precisely the practices I conduct when actually doing mathematics! What skills do you regularly practice? Might too have I broken the mindset that one must completely master one topic before moving onto the next, knowing that later content is connected to earlier topics and so might offer further clarity and nuance to beginning ideas?

My sense is that a traditional table of contents in a syllabus can leave an authoritarian impression, giving a student no sense of permission to take ownership of his or her thinking, and so might colour our in-class discussions. Imagine projecting an image of non-linear course map on a screen during each class. Does not the map alone invite questions about interconnections and possible extensions?

And dare I mention that the Beagle software is interactive? With access to the map course participants can add comments and questions, conduct discussions, upload additional content, draw connections, and rearrange the visuals.

I was an English teacher in Chicago Public Schools with certification in special education, and when my school was facing a shortage of certified special education teachers, I was pulled in mid-year to co-teach a junior-level trigonometry class with the math teacher. Like me, they hated it. What was the point in working and reworking these calculations? What were we trying to figure out anyway? And I originally agreed with them. After spending years teaching English and reading, I was being challenged to move beyond what I had always been doing.

I worked with my co-teacher to create a series of supplementary lessons through a different lens to let students experience personal meaning and creativity in their math. I found that many students felt frustrated with math because they needed to come to one single correct answer.

This was especially hard with my diverse learners, who struggled with multistep equations. Next, students chose a multistep equation they had initially struggled with.

Working in pairs or small groups, they talked through their thinking and the steps needed to solve the equation. Their partners were encouraged to ask questions and get clarification so the ideas were explained at the simplest level. Using the books as models, students revised and wrote down their explanations to make them so simple that they could be explained to a young child. After they wrote out their explanations, my co-teacher and I challenged them to create short books using card stock and colored pencils.

Students worked with their small groups to talk through ideas and illustrate their books. If they struggled, they were able to pair with another student to create a book together. Sharing with other students helped them explain ideas in new ways, which helped them develop a deeper understanding. And they were all excited to see how they could use writing and art skills in an authentic way in math class. The interesting thing often overlooked in math class is that it already includes stories and real-life connections, in the form of story problems.

They might include calculating area so that someone can buy new carpet for their home. First, students would work in small groups to go through the chapter in their math textbook and collect the story problems, writing them on index cards. Next, students would lay out the cards to see the questions as a whole: Out of 10 or more story problems in the chapter, were there five similar ones they could group together? What problem-solving skills were called for to work on these problems?

Looking at these five unconnected stories, students thought why they needed to solve them, and used their reasons to come up with some type of connected ideas.

They created backstories for the names in the problems, in the process turning them into more developed characters. They identified challenges or reasons why the characters needed to solve the problem.

Finally, they combined the story problems they had created and developed a longer narrative to connect these scenarios, an overarching story rooted in authentic math story problems.

Survival was a common theme: One group wrote about a zombie apocalypse and another imagined an alien invasion, situations in which characters needed to solve the problems and employ skills that would help them survive.
